Teachers want stronger representation

Dear Editor,

Colin Bynoe’s record as Regional Vice- President Berbice of the Guyana Teachers’ Union leaves much to be desired. He has demonstrated a natural proclivity to support the Executives of the GTU even when decisions made are not in the best interests of the general membership. He has refused to comment on the salary agreement even though it is a bad agreement.

As Regional Vice-President Berbice, he has not had any workshops to educate teachers about their rights. Most of the branches in Berbice are not functioning properly and many executives at the branch level are unclear about what to do. He is never around to offer guidance or to lead the teachers of Berbice.

Teachers need someone who is militant, has a vision and strong sense of conviction. When the salary agreement was signed, where was the voice of Mr Bynoe? VAT has hit teachers hard, where is the voice of Mr Bynoe? While teachers continue to struggle because of poor representation by the President of the GTU, Mr Bynoe has been silent. I cannot, based on his record as a trade union leader support Mr Bynoe for the Presidency of the Guyana Teachers’ Union.

Yours faithfully,
