The Guyana Association of Private Security Organisa-tions (GAPSO) says it supports the police and the public works ministry’s efforts to safeguard the city’s traffic lights from vandalism.
In a press release GAPSO president Roshan Khan said he and all patriotic citizens are disheartened that there are persons who are stealing the components of and destroying the traffic lights. He said removing the batteries and other gear from the traffic lights system puts the lives of road users at risk and the authorities should exercise ‘no tolerance’ with the perpetrators when they are caught.
Further, it said infrastructure constructed and instituted for citizens’ well-being must be guarded by all citizens. GAPSO urges citizens who witness persons vandalising public property to effect a citizen’s arrest or to report such an act to the police.
It also said its members, such as the GEB Security Service, NM Security Solutions and MMC security have agreed to help apprehend vandals and to conduct security checks at all street lights as they patrol.
