Barbados maintained their dominance over Guyana at the end of the second day of their second round clash in their 2008 Regional Carib Beer cricket match at the Kensington Oval ground yesterday.
Replying to Guyana ‘s first innings total of 185, the Barbadians finished the day on 256-3 and a lead of 71 runs with seven wickets intact.
Play started yesterday morning some 65 minutes after the scheduled start due to early morning rain with Barbados 53-2.
Jason Haynes was not out on 22 and Ryan Hinds 11 not out and the home team progressed to 109-2 at lunch with Haynes on 54 and Hinds 24.
The two posted 51 runs off 19 overs in the morning session as they sought to consolidate their team’s advantage.
Haynes continued to plunder the Guyanese bowlers as he reached his 50 before the lunch break when he pushed a delivery from off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine to deep mid off for a single. It took him 109 balls from 156 minutes of batting and he hit five fours in the process.
After the lunch break, the two posted the 100-run partnership for the second wicket which came from 228 balls and 149 minutes with 11 fours.
By the time the clouds opened up at 1.40pm, Barbados were 152-2 with Haynes on 68 and Hinds 47.
When play eventually resumed after a break of two hours, Hinds reached his half century, his second of the season, fifth against Guyana and 29th regional with a drive through the vacant point position for two off the bowling of Jeremy Gordon.
He faced 140 balls and struck seven fours from 157 minutes.
The next goal was achieving first innings points and the defending champions duly achieved that goal with a push to midwicket for two by Hinds who stepped on the gas later on with successive boundaries through backward square and long leg off Permaul.`
Haynes then stepped into overdrive and reached his 100, his first at this level with a wonderful cover drive off Crandon who was operating from the Joel Garner End. He had previously struck the same bowler to a wide long off position for four two balls earlier. He struck 10 fours from the 268 balls faced during his 186 minutes of batting for his debut hundred.
Hinds then took over the attack on Crandon as he took nine runs off his following over to move into the 80s, which included two wonderful drives for four, bringing up the 200 for the Barbadians.
It took 262 minutes from 61.5 overs.
Hinds continued to attack the bowling and duly reached his century, his seventh regional ton. He faced 217 balls and struck 12 fours during his 239 minutes vigil at the wicket.
Barbados soon lost Haynes, who was caught at first slip by Royston Crandon off Leon Johnson, six minutes before the close ending a 212-run partnership for the second wicket with Hinds.
Haynes batted for 319 minutes and faced 205 balls hitting 11 fours during his stay at the wicket.
At the close, Barbados were 256-3 with Hinds still there on 101 and new batsman Alcindo Holder yet to score. Johnson ended with 1-4, Mohammed 1-41 and Gordon 1-54 bowling for Guyana .
Today is the third day and play is set to start at 10am weather permitting; the Guyanese will be looking to restrain the home team from getting quick runs and increasing their lead which is currently 71 runs.
