Torturing a child is a bad start to the year

Dear Editor,

The Kaieteur News of Saturday January 12, 2008 reports a case of torture of a child in police custody in Berbice. This, coming along with a series of torture allegations is a sickening start to 2008.

The child, from the report, has a lawyer. The officials who are responsible for child protection in Guyana cannot bury their heads in the sand if the necessary reports are made. Hopefully these reports are circulated in the media so that action could be followed up. The police who tortured Ravanlee Chan should be brought to justice as should the other persons who have been using torture as part of their official duties.

Those of us who told Minister Rohee that we preferred goodies to dealing with torture probably do not have children. Could those people ring up his office now, since we know that we are not immune any more, and let him know that we have changed our minds, and that we want him to investigate all reports of torture, unless it is too late for us?

Yours faithfully,

Vidyaratha Kissoon
