Attempted murder of ‘friend’

Two Campbellville residents who are accused of almost beating a man to death informed the court yesterday that there has been a $100,000 settlement in the matter but they were however released on $150,000 bail each so that advice could be sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the way forward.

Kaneshwar Singh, 56, and Fizel Khan, 35, both of Lot 47 Duncan and Sheriff streets, were not allowed to plead to the joint charge of attempting to commit murder when they appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The duo is accused of attempting to murder Ravi Persaud on Tuesday.

Attorney-at-law Gary Ramlochan, who entered an appearance for them, informed the court that compensation in the sum of $100,000 has been given to the complainant.

He then laid over a document to that effect to the court.

In giving the particulars of his clients, the counsel said that Singh is the owner of a vulcanizing service and is the father of two adult children while Khan operates a car wash at his home and is also the father of two.

According to Ramlochan, his clients are not related to the virtual complainant but they are good friends.

“We have reached a settlement in this matter and have offered $100,000 to the VC,” he added, later informing the court that his clients have apologized.

Meanwhile Persaud who was present in court appeared slightly weak while his entire head was bandaged and his left forearm was in a cast from the elbow to the wrist and was in a sling.

He told the court that the duo had accused him of breaking and entering their home but stressed that he never did. Persaud added that he doesn’t live far from the two.

“I does pass deh place everyday and somebody tell them that I break into they place. They beat me up. Break me hand and lash me in me head with a iron,” he said

He told the magistrate that he has accepted the compensation in the sum that was stated.

Police prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that the complainant has agreed to accept compensation but the file will have to be sent to the DPP for advice.

Ramlochan then asked for his clients to be admitted to reasonable bail and the magistrate later granted bail in the sum of $150,000.

The matter will continue on February 9.
