An Inter-Agency Committee tasked with managing security at the CJIA yesterday hosted its inaugural meeting.
A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release quoted Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee as saying that the purpose of the meeting was to set the stage for improving security at the main port of entry. He said these steps are being taken to tackle the illicit drug trade.
GINA said the Committee was established on December 3. Members from participating agencies are expected to share information and intelligence gathering to tackle drug trafficking and to tighten loopholes relating to the movement of passengers, cargo and mail through the airport. Further, the Committee is expected to make recommendations and advise on appropriate law enforcement and intelligence.
According to GINA, stakeholders will also be mandated to employ persons who are “security-vetted”. A review of employees’ security status will be done periodically and persons known to have committed or facilitated any serious breach of airport security will be fired.
The Committee comprises TravelSpan, North American Airlines, Total Air Cargo, Caribbean Airlines, Constellation Tours Limited, Laparkan Airways, the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Revenue Authority, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit and Chief Executive Officer at the CJIA Ramesh Ghir.
