Woman accused of stealing from sister granted $30,000 bail

A 35-year-old woman accused of stealing $39,000 in items from her sister with whom she shared a house, was refused bail yesterday when she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on a charge of simple larceny.

Seeta Elliot of 46 Meadow Brook Gardens pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that between December 24 to January 14, at the said address, Elliot stole items valued at $39,000, property of her sister Babita Sookram.

Attorney-at-Law Mohamed Zafar, representing Elliot, said his client had stolen none of the items in question.

The distressed complainant said she left the home on Christmas Eve and returned two weeks later. It was on her return that she discovered the items were missing. Sookram said she suspected that Elliot had stolen them. In an attempt to be reasonable, Sookram said, she gave her sister some time to repay her for the stolen items. However, the woman failed to do so and the matter was reported to the police.

Elliot was placed on $30,000 bail and the matter continues on February 7 in Court Three.
