Octogenarian landlord charged with abusing tenant

An 84-year-old man who allegedly dumped his tenant’s possessions out of her rented apartment and beat her with a stick was yesterday placed on $40,000 bail.

Wasir Khan of 83 Grove, East Bank Demerara was brought to court by his tenant who alleged that Khan does “terrible things” to her. In tears, the woman related that she was out on Monday last, when her landlord went into her apartment and removed all her belongings. She said that upon returning home, she attempted to speak to Khan but he beat her with a stick. The woman said it was agreed during a recent court proceeding that she was to move from the apartment by March 17 since she and the accused have ongoing problems. However, she said that Khan has not stopped tormenting her and she cannot move because she has not acquired a place to live as yet.

The tenant said that some of her things were damaged during the removal and she needs compensation. To this, Khan said that he offered her $50,000 “but she wants more”.

The magistrate told Khan that he had no right to put the woman out until the court ordered date. She advised her to get advice from a lawyer for the next court date, scheduled for February 8.
