Row over alcohol lands man in court

A 43-year-old man, who allegedly injured his drinking buddy, was yesterday placed on bail when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on a charge of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting bodily harm.

Dianand Persaud of Lot 57 Third Street, Alexander Village pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that on January 16 Persaud injured Danraj Narine by hitting him with a piece of iron.

However, in his defence Persaud told the court that Narine attacked him first. According to the accused, he and Narine were drinking together on the day in question. Persaud said that later that day he gave Narine $1,000 and asked him to buy a bottle of drink and a pack of cigarettes. Narine took some time before he returned, Persaud said, and when he finally did he was more intoxicated than when he left and brought neither drink nor cigarettes.

Persaud further ex-plained that he asked Narine for the items and in reply the man verbally abused him and then picked up a piece of iron and attempted to hit him. It was at that point in time, he said, he pulled the iron aw2ay from Narine and hit the man on his foot.

The accused was placed on $50,000 bail and the matter will continue on February 22 in Court Two.
