Lusignan residents disgruntled over massacre response

Five days have passed since the brutal slaying of eleven persons at Tract A, Lusignan and even as the residents bid farewell to ten of the victims today, they are still dissatisfied with the response of the government and the armed forces to the incident so far.

Residents say that they are still living in fear as little or nothing is being done to ensure that they are safe in their homes especially at nights.

Although the joint services patrol the area, both on foot and in vehicles, in the eyes of the residents this is not enough.

Two Lusignan residents Ali and Pream yesterday questioned why poor innocent persons had to be targeted. Ali, his voiced laced with anger told this newspaper that if Rondell `Fineman’ Rawlins is indeed behind the massacre, he should go after the people who has his wife and not after the innocent. The man stressed that this country needs international help if this situation is to be dealt with properly. He said that he believed that with help from international security forces the joint services ranks could catch the criminals especially the dangerous ones.

He said that the president is doing nothing to ensure that citizens are safe and should have had several helicopters in the area searching the backlands.

Pream while agreeing with his fellow villager said that the government has not been doing much since this tragedy occurred. He said that the clearing of the backlands is the first thing that should have been done.

“Them ain’t doin nothing man. Dem ain’t even mekin an attempt to look fuh these people”, he said.

Since Saturday’s massacre the police had come in for heavy criticism from residents for failing to respond in a timely manner although several calls were placed to police stations along the East Coast for assistance during the bloody raid by a large gang.

Pream said that when the police finally arrived no attempt was made to cordon off the area or set up security checkpoints along the East Coast in an effort to capture the killers. He added that police should be in the backlands looking for them.

With the fear evident in his voice, he said that at night sleeping is uncomfortable. “We are very scared. Right now we sleeping without light in we house
