PNCR must make clear statement on criminals in Buxton – PPP

The PPP is appalled at the response of the PNCR Leader to President Bharrat Jagdeo’s call on the PNCR to acknowledge that criminals are using Buxton as a safe haven and is calling on the PNCR to make its position “pellucid and categorical” on the issue.

In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, the PPP said that PNCR Leader Robert Corbin’s response that the PNCR was not going to stand by and see innocent young men be sacrificed (for political expediency) was an “attack on the integrity of the security forces.”

The PPP said it was shocking that Corbin made that statement only a few hours after he attended and spoke at the funeral of ten of the eleven victims.

The PPP said Corbin’s statement could “only be described as a defence of those criminals who have held the people of Buxton hostage by imposing themselves on them while carrying out diabolical crimes.”

The ruling party quoted the Kaieteur News as saying that the leader of the gang said he wanted back his wife who lives in Buxton and that he admitted responsibility for the carnage in Lusignan.

The President is reported to have said in response to a question from a resident whether he would engage the PNCR in discussions on the issue of crime and security that this could not happen unless the party’s leaders publicly acknowledge that Buxton was a safe haven for criminals.

To this remark Corbin said it was a pity that at a time when Guyana required responsible and visionary leadership the President had chosen to indulge in infantile behaviour.

He had added that his party would not stand idly by and see innocent young men be sacrificed for political expediency, “so that President Jagdeo and the security forces can create delusion to appease the suffering relatives that they have begun to do something to solve the crime and security situation in Guyana.”
