Boy suffering from nasal tumour leaves for treatment in US

After years suffering from a tumour growing in his nasal cavity and numerous public appeals by his mother for financial assistance to obtain medical attention abroad, 15-year-old Ricardo Bynoe will be leaving for Maryland, US, today to have surgery.

The cost of the surgery is being handled by doctors linked to US Naval Flag which had come to these shores last September offering relief to thousands suffering from various medical complaints.

The lad had visited the ‘Comfort Ship’ along with his mother, Michelle, but they had been told that nothing much could be done because high tech equipment and specialist medical personnel would be needed before such surgery could be undertaken.

However, an MRI scan was done and the medical personnel told Michelle that they would look into the case and see what help they could get overseas.

A doctor who was working on the ship later visited Bynoe at his home, and following an examination, she said that she would keep in contact with them.

Speaking to Stabroek News yesterday an excited Michelle said that it was the members of the medical ship who were sponsoring the surgery which is scheduled to be done in Baltimore, Maryland on February 14.

She could not say how long their stay in Maryland would be, but she informed this newspaper that some sort of preparation would be done to Bynoe two days before the surgery. “I am overjoyed that the surgery is now going to be done. I am hopeful and praying every day that it will be successful and my son will return to lead a normal life,” she said close to tears.
