Army apologises for inferior coffin

The Guyana Defence Force has issued an apology to the relatives of fallen soldier corporal Ivor Williams for the inferior coffin that it had initially provided for the deceased saying it was unintended.

In a press release the army said that it “apologises unreservedly to the relatives for the additional pain and anguish they suffered as a result of this incident.”

After the discovery of the inferior coffin, arrangements were made with the management of the Newburg/Lykens funeral home and it was replaced with a casket.

Williams was later laid to rest at his hometown in Dartmouth, Essequibo, with full military honours.

The force said it remains committed to ensuring that the family of the slain soldier receives all necessary benefits as a result of his death.
