Police mum on Regent St ‘abduction’

Up to last evening, the police could provide no further information on the man who was chased down by gun-wielding men, grabbed and then taken away on Regent Street in what appeared to be a kidnapping, reminiscent of the phantom stratagems seen during the rampant crime spree of 2002 – 2003.

Yesterday afternoon Commander of ‘A’ Division Welton Trotz told this newspaper that the force was still trying to ascertain the name of the man involved in the incident and the circumstances surrounding the case. Police Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker told this paper that he had no information on the matter.

But suspicion is rife that the grabbing of the man was part of a Police operation, whether or not the persons who took the man away are on the government’s payroll.

Two armed men on Saturday forced the man into their vehicle after first chasing him from King Street to Regent Street.

Reports indicated that the man had been about to leave in his car, a burgundy AT 192 Carina with number plate PKK 9308, when he jumped back out and started running towards Regent Street.

An eyewitness told this newspaper that he noticed the man running and that he was being chased by two men who both had handguns. The eyewitness said too that the man ran into a store and tried to seek help, but the men caught him and whisked him away to their vehicle. Eyewitnesses said the man was taken to a blue AT 192 Carina which sped off.

Efforts to reach Trotz last evening for further information on the abduction proved futile.
