Stock exchange trading to resume

Trading on the stock exchange will resume from today after a week-long suspension, according to a notice from the Guyana Association of Securities Companies and Intermediaries (GASCI).

Trading was temporarily suspended from Monday January 28, 2008 and this was made known to the public through a notice in the press.

Writing on behalf of the Board, Operations Manager of GASCI George Edwards said that the Board decided on the resumption “as the issues that led to the suspension of trading are being addressed by the Minister of Finance.”

The Board of Directors of GASCI had promised an explanation as to what led to the suspension of trading, a first in the almost five years of operation of the stock exchange. This explanation is still to be proffered.

The suspension was decided on at a Board meeting on January 23.
