An allegation of missing funds was not raised before

Dear Editor,

Many have raised harsh and uncalled for criticisms against Guyana Labour Union’s General Secretary, Mr Carvil Duncan. Some have described him as a mere employee and said he has no right to speak on behalf of the organization.

In fact, he is the chief negotiator and administrator, past President of the GTUC and present President of FITUG and also sub-regional coordinator of the ITF. This young man joined the union in the early eighties working at Guyana Timbers Limited. He served as shop steward, branch chairman, Assistant General Secretary and now General Secretary of the Guyana Labour Union.

This union has attained the second largest membership of unions in Guyana under his stewardship.

My question is what have Mr Corbin and the PNC done for this union? Mr Corbin presided over meetings of the National Executive Council for three years and during those years, he examined the monthly and quarterly financial statements and all was well, until he found out he was not nominated for the last election. He suddenly discovered $2.9 million missing, but the auditor general’s office never mentioned anything about it and it is in the process of auditing our books.

The members want the union to be free from any political interference, so it is time we take back our union from PNC control.

Yours faithfully,

Veronica Cranville
