Guyanese star batsman and Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has dismissed reports that he was in hiding and had left the country for fear of being targeted by criminals after suspicious men were seen in his neighbourhood, and is incensed that these “rumours” are being peddled.
Reports surfaced on Thursday that the Guyana and West Indies cricketer had been at a practice session here when he learnt about the report of the men in his neighbourhood. It was soon after this that some family members were reported to have left the country.
Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Sarwan said that he is not in hiding and that he has and will continue to turn up for his practice sessions. He told this newspaper that he would have been at Banks DIH Thirst Park for a session yesterday afternoon. Sarwan is to appear in the Stanford 20/20 tournament in Antigua this week.
He also blasted Prime News’ reporting on the issue, stating that the newscast ran its story on Thursday without checking with him.
Earlier in the day yesterday, this newspaper spoke to the cricketer’s father, who said although some men were in the area it has nothing to do with what the reports were suggesting.
When asked by Stabroek News on Sunday, a brother of Sarwan declined comment on the local reports that Sarwan and other family members left the country hurriedly. The brother did indicate however that the cricketer was in the country.
