Chain snatcher dad gets second chance

A 21-year-old man yesterday appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on a charge of larceny from person and he was placed on a bond to keep the peace when the virtual complainant refused to press charges because the man had a five-month-old baby to take of.

It is alleged that on February 9, Quame Jawunza of Lot 2 Old Road, La Grange West Bank Demerara, snatched a gold chain and pendant worth $65,000 from Audrey Chesney.

Jawunza at first pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle. However, after the woman refused to press charges he admitted to the court that he had snatched the chain.

Chesney asked the court to place the man on a bond because she didn’t want him to be remanded since it had come to her knowledge that he was the father of a five-month-old baby.

Jawunza was ordered to pay $10,000 court cost and he was placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years.
