Govt’s ‘existing plan’ no answer to worsening crime – WPA

The WPA says despite the suffering of “the broad mass of the poor and the powerless” the PPP/C government continues to resist the view that it lacks the will and desire to address the rapidly deteriorating crime situation in the country.

In a press release the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) said in the face of government’s boasts about a much vaunted “security plan” and its perverse refusal to consult with stakeholders who have been critical of its approach in Buxton, in Bare Root and in other communities countrywide, “The inescapable fact is that the solution to the present crisis in Guyana requires the widest local and international input.”

It is in this context that the WPA is cautiously optimistic about the meeting held yesterday between President Bharrat Jagdeo and stakeholders from all parts of society. It said if good sense prevailed it can be the long overdue first step in the process of arriving at a national consensus “to take this country out of the morass in which it presently finds itself.”

In this light the WPA reiterated its support for the approach which it said it first made in 2002.

The group sees it as a sign of good faith “if the government puts an end to GINA’s divisive and incessant war propaganda that seeks to vilify individuals and organisations that have a different opinion and approach.”

The WPA also said except the contempt for views other than their own is left behind, the emergency stakeholder consultation will be nothing but another charade.
