Murdered UG student buried

Dennis Edghill, the University of Guyana (UG) student who was stabbed on February 15 and later died as a result of his wounds, was yesterday laid to rest.

The 23-year-old was a second-year Communications student at UG. He was stabbed in the neck and abdomen at UG on the night of February 15, and succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight on February 16 while undergoing emergency surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Recounting what had transpired, an eyewitness told Stabroek News that Edghill and his friends were hanging out near the campus’s benab. A short distance away, a man from another group consuming alcohol began hitting his girlfriend. Edghill knew the girl and went over to see what was happening, the eyewitness said. It was then he was stabbed with a broken bottle.

Yesterday at the Merriman Funeral Home and The Meeting Room; where the funeral service was held, many showed up to give their sympathy to the family and bid Edghill a final goodbye.

Desiree Edghill, the deceased’s aunt, said that to date the suspect has not been found and it has come to her knowledge that he has gone into hiding. She stressed that immediate action needed to be taken and more effort put into finding the culprit.
