Three Bartica suspects in city for more grilling

The three men who Bartica Police held to assist with investigations into the brutal slaying of 12 persons in the community on Sunday were yesterday transferred to the Criminal Investigation headquarters in the city where they are to undergo further interrogation.

The trio includes a sailor who police feel has vital information since he may have been initially involved with the perpetrators of the act. The man has told the police, this newspaper was informed, that he was called and threatened by the gunmen after he refused to assist them further in the run-up to the attack which also left many persons injured. Police are said to be working on the theory that the man may have reneged on his promises and so he was threatened.

The men were handcuffed when they arrived in Georgetown.

Commander of ‘E’ & ‘F” Division Gavin Primo confirmed yesterday that the men were transferred to the city.

This newspaper has learnt from a police source that one of the other men may have housed strangers in his house and also provided vital information.

Assistant Commissioner – Operations, Paul Slowe and GDF Colonel General staff Bruce Lovell visited Bartica yesterday and met with troops on the ground.

Meanwhile yesterday the community was in a far better state and there was much activity.

Regional Chairman Holbert Knights reported that members of the community seem pleased with the joint services presence and refuted reports that the community had been placed under curfew.

He said more taxi drivers have returned to work and persons in the community, though still a bit fearful, were going about their usual activities.
