The donor countries can allow more Indian emigration to help balance our population

Dear Editor,

I have a great suggestion for the Canadian, American, and British governments to help with the political problems in Guyana. Guyana really needs a federal type system of government to solve its political problems. Winner takes all will not work. The country will always be involved in this political bickering under the current system.

My suggestion is something these countries can implement. They will not be interfering in Guyana’s internal affairs. This is not something that is not taking place at the moment, they will just speed the process up.

The Indian population has been decreasing due to emigration. My suggestion is that these countries immediately give permanent residence status to all persons of Indian origin whose relatives have sponsored them to the respective countries. If these four countries can absorb 50,000 persons of Indian origin between now and the next election in 2011, this alone will be effective.

Continue this for the next five years after 2011 and this will level the playing field and ensure that all parties come to the table and work out a fair system that is inclusive of everyone.

I ask that this suggestion be seriously considered. These countries are already open to immigration. These persons will leave anyway because of the pull factor.

Yours faithfully,

Ganesh Singh
