Fishing crew still missing

A fishing crew has not been heard from since venturing out to sea on January 23, leaving their families deeply worried about their fate.

The crew of the boat comprised captain Mahadeo Ramdeo, 24, of 190 Coldingen Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara (ECD), Ramnarine Jagmohan, 46, of 356 Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara and another man, also said to be from ECD and whose identity this newspaper was unable to ascertain.

Speaking with Stabroek News yesterday, distressed relatives of Ramdeo recounted that he had worked with the Pritipaul Singh Investments Company vessel for five years. They said that he left home on January 23 and he was supposed to have been gone for 21 days as is normal but since then nothing has been heard from him. They said that normally supplies are only carried to last for 21 days.

A tearful Khobindi Sanichara, Ramdeo’s mother said that she had last spoken to her only son at 1:30 pm on January 23 when he called to say that he was leaving. She recounted that he had only once stayed on the sea for longer than 22 days and she had been worried. “He normally tell me, when 24 days reach, start get worried”. She stated that after the boat did not return on February 13, she got concerned and called the company. “I call and they seh they ain’t hearing nothing from he”, she stated. The woman said that after hearing nothing, she visited the company on Monday and spoke to management. She said that she was told that they would send out some boats to look for the vessel. Sanichara said that she requested that an aerial search be initiated but did not receive a favourable answer.

Meanwhile, Jagmohan’s mother, Latchmin Jagmohan was also worried yesterday and recounted that she had gone to find out about her son, when she met Sanichara at the company. She said that she had also called the company last Friday and was told that the boat had not come in as yet. The woman revealed that yesterday she was told that boats would be sent out to look for the vessel. She said that her 46-year-old son is the father of two daughters and had worked with the company “on and off”.

The matter was reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station on Monday.
