Massacres suggest ‘agenda to instil fear’ -Bar Association

The Guyana Bar Association (GBA) says the brutal slayings at Lusignan and Bartica are disturbing as they suggest “an agenda to instil fear” in the society.

The pattern involving brazen attacks on law enforcement is an attempt to demoralize and ultimately dismantle the country’s security apparatus and must be resisted whenever it occurs, the GBA said in a press release. “As previously noted, every new wave seems higher than its predecessor and nothing short of our nation’s collective resolve must be brought to bear in order to defeat this menace,” it added.

As a new year in the annals of Guyana’s proud history as a republic begins, the GBA calls on all sectors and strata of the society to stand together to face down this common threat.

The group said it also urges a clear, coherent and above all, a socially cohesive and systemic response aimed at bringing this situation and the circumstances that engendered it to a close.

All political parties must “meaningfully recognise and engage with civil society aimed at a genuine partnership,” the GBA said, adding that civil society must respond soberly and responsibly in the quest for a stable and durable relationship built on mutual trust and respect.

Meanwhile, the GBA extends sympathies to all the families affected and repeats its call that no lawful effort be spared to bring those responsible to justice with the utmost dispatch.
