With reference to the letter of N Bisnauth captioned “Let’s find homes for the animals we have, not import pure breed pets” (08.02.20) I totally agree that pure breeds, or in fact any dog whatsoever, should not be brought or even allowed into Guyana, mainly because the country is already overflowing with unwanted animals. Until the Guyanese people can prove to the rest of the world that you really care for your animals, it should not be allowed.
There are of course many people who do love their dogs, but because there are so many strays, there are obviously not enough homes. Wouldn’t it be better to adopt a healthy, sterilised dog from the GSPCA and give it a loving home?
I left Guyana some time ago but in the last two years of living there, I picked up over 1,000 dogs from the streets and had another 650 puppies at my home during that time. There are only a handful of those dogs alive today but the majority of them that didn’t survive either had heartworm, were sick or they were unwanted pets found on the streets from as far as Bartica.
Don’t let people start importing them unless of course it’s a personal pet and certainly not for the purpose of breeding . Rather go to the GSPCA and adopt from there and give a loving home to an unwanted dog. Hello to you all who work so hard at the GSPCA,
