Security has to be the budgetary priority

Dear Editor,

We are all aware that there are many pressing issues in society that the government has to focus on. Housing happens to be one of them. Many people are in need of house lots and some need to be relocated.

This is very important; however, society is currently faced with an issue that supersedes housing, and that is security. Members of the PNCR are moaning that less money was allocated in this year’s budget for housing.

What I do not understand is the way some people think. There have been cries for months for improvements in the country’s security. Isn’t it obvious that more money would be allocated to security resulting in deductions from some sectors? At the current state of our country this should be acceptable. The government will continue to provide access to affordable housing for low-income earners.

Can’t we appreciate the fact that since the PPP took office over 70,000 house lots have been distributed?

Please, I urge the members of the PNCR not to put another wood in this country’s fire by trying to create another debate and further tension in our society.

Yours faithfully,

Paulette Gomes
