Man stabbed another while in custody

A 23-year-old man was remanded when he appeared before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of unlawful and malicious wounding.

Sherwin Allen of ‘C’ Field, Sophia allegedly stabbed Wendell Maynard while they were both in custody for theft of a police officer’s motor-scooter.

Allen told the court that he does not know Maynard and he is being wrongfully accused.

He said that he was attacked by Maynard and another inmate with a sharpened toothbrush and acted in self-defence.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Mathews said that the defendant is known to the police as Idingo McKenzie and has pending matters at the East La Penitence police station for the stolen motor-scooter and for burning his mother’s clothes.

Allen on the other hand denied that he knows any Idingo McKenzie.

The matter was transferred to Court Two for March 17.
