Labourer found dead after axe attack

The body of a Guysuco Estate labourer was found floating in a canal at Port Mourant, Corentyne two days after he plunged into it to escape a beating from another man.

Ken Leitch, 33, of Rose Hall Town was hit behind his neck, with an axe and he jumped into a trench to escape and he “never came up back.”

Stabroek News understands that Leitch, a father of seven was imbibing alcohol with his friends in a shop around 1 pm when an argument ensued between him and another man over the selection of music. Reports are that Leitch picked up a bottle and hit the man who, instead of retaliating, went home and informed his brother about what had transpired.

Later, as Leitch and a friend were walking “south along the sideline dam” to go to the friend’s house the victim and his brother came out of their yard and the brother hit him with the axe. Leitch, who was said to be heavily intoxicated at the time, jumped into the canal. However, there were several claims that the man was seen coming out of the canal at another section and getting into a car.

Reports are that residents saw the body floating in the canal around 6 am and informed the police. The body was transported to the mortuary.

The suspect and his brother have been taken into custody and are assisting police with investigations.
