A 45-year-old woman was repeatedly stabbed about her body late yesterday morning by her mentally ill brother following an argument over a lottery ticket at their Kitty home.
June King of Lot 40 Public Road, Kitty, who, according to reports is also mentally ill, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital covered in blood around 12.10 pm yesterday. She was subsequently admitted to the medical institution’s High Dependency Unit and was said to be in a serious condition owing to the wounds she received and the heavy blood loss she suffered.
Stabroek News was informed that shortly before noon, the two siblings, who have had several brushes with the law and who had only recently been released from prison, had a heated argument over a Lotto ticket.
During the row, the brother, who was said to be younger than King, reportedly broke a bottle and began stabbing King repeatedly about the body. The bleeding woman who at one point lost consciousness was rushed to the hospital.
Stabroek News was told by hospital sources that when the injured woman arrived at the institution she “looked dead”.
Police later arrived on the scene and arrested the brother. He was taken to the hospital for medical attention since he sustained several cuts on his hands and head.
When this newspaper visited the hospital just after 4 pm, the brother was walking around a section of the waiting area of the emergency room with handcuffs on. His head was raised to the ceiling and he was singing loudly. The unbuttoned and torn plaid shirt and off-white three-quarter pants that he was wearing were covered in blood. This newspaper noticed a wound on the right side of his head which had several stitches.
A Kitty resident, living not too far from the siblings’ home, told this newspaper that they are both mentally ill. The woman said that the two had been charged and imprisoned for violent behaviour, which included stabbing people. She said that they were both only recently released from prison. The woman said too that on one occasion, the brother was seen running along the public road naked.
The resident who ex-pressed shock over the incident, recalled that King had stabbed her (King’s) sister who lives overseas.
Police are continuing their investigations into the incident.
