Still in intense pain and wondering why she was targeted, Petra Ming in the open ward at the Georgetown Hospital has gotten no word from the police as to who her assailants were.
Ming’s husband Quincy Ming arrived from Barbados on Saturday afternoon after learning of the attack on his wife on Thursday night. The man said that he was contacted by a neighbour who told him of what had happened; he got on the first available flight and came back to Guyana.
He expressed anger that this could happen to them. Quietly feeding soup to Petra at the hospital yesterday, Quincy said he had no idea who could have attacked his wife, but said that it must be individuals who were interested in getting money. “We are good people and don’t have problems with anyone,” he said. The man who had left for Barbados several months before to work said that the attack surprised him.
Petra, obviously still in pain, with her son Quinell cuddled at her side, told this newspaper that her arms and hands are numb and there is an intense throbbing in her head, which is bandaged. She said that the doctors are watching her closely.
Petra said that she had just locked up her business place on Thursday night and was heading home when the men jumped out as if from no where and attacked her. She has been operating the business for six years now and this is the first time she was robbed.
Petra Ming was attacked shortly after 11 pm last Thursday night after she finished locking up her business, Comfort Plus Internet café located at Lot 331 First Street, Mocha Arcadia, when she was attacked by two masked armed men. The men battered her with concrete blocks, shot her in the arm and escaped with a bag of money she was carrying.
Residents had expressed surprise and shock at the attack since it was the first in nearly one year, and raised suspicions that persons in the community might be a part of it. They had expressed concern at the lack of transportation at the Mocha Police Station and the careless way the crime scene was treated by the police. No one has been held so far by the police in connection with the robbery.
