Carifta selectees dominate at GASA Mashramani swim meet

Three of the four swimmers who have been selected to represent the country at the 2008 Carifta Games which are to be held in Aruba at month-end, were in full throttle on Sunday at the Guyana Amateur Swimming Associa-tion’s Mashramani swim meet which concluded yesterday at the Colgrain swimming pool.

During the second day of competition, the three swimmers, Jessica Stephenson, Linden Wickham and Ronaldo Rodrigues, all completed commanding victories in their individual events.

First up was Jessica Stephenson who swam eight lengths of the Colgrain pool to gain a commanding victory in the girls’ 11-12 200 yards freestyle in a time of 2:19.54s, while her opponents, Athena Gaskin, Britany Van Lange, Athena Foo and Gabby Fraser followed in that same order, more than a pool length behind.

Stephenson continued to dominate throughout the day as she recorded victories in the 100 yards breaststroke and 50 yards freestyle.

Next up was Linden Wickham who eased to victory in the boys’ 13-14 50 yards backstroke, 100 yards breaststroke and 50 yards freestyle. Ronaldo Rodrigues won the 100 yards backstroke and 50 yards freestyle, completing both events in the impressive times of 1:05.51s and 29.0s respectively.

The fourth GASA swimmer who was selected for the 2008 Carifta games was unable to compete this past weekend since he is recovering from an illness.

GASA 2007 age group champion Nathanael King also performed outstandingly during the course of the day as he raced to three victories. King dominated in the boys’ 9-10 category winning the 200 yards freestyle, 100 yards breaststroke, 50 yards backstroke and 50 yards freestyle.

Other outstanding performers included Noelle Smith who claimed victories in the 50 yards freestyle and backstroke in the girls’ 13-14 age group, along with Accalia Khan and Alan Lowe who recorded multiple wins in their various age groups.
