PPP supports Parliamentary Committee on Security

The PPP says it welcomes the decision to establish a standing Parliamentary Committee on Security at the recently held stakeholders’ meeting.

In a press release the party said an agreement was also made to include government ministers as part of that body, at the two meetings convened by President Bharrat Jagdeo. “This we believe is the proper mechanism to deal with issues that can enhance the capacity of our forces,” the party said.

It said too the fact that the public will be allowed to make presentations to the body will involve civil society in the process of governance in a way that has never before been done. The PPP said it is heartened by the consensus that was reached to have all the rights commissions established within ninety days.

“The results of the encounter went far beyond fighting of crimes and has the tremendous potential of further entrenching our democracy and to deepen and broaden its content. It also enhances inclusivity in the governance process”, the party said.
