UG lecturer on death by dangerous driving charge

A 47-year-old Uni-versity of Guyana lecturer was placed on $400,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Azad Khan of 32 Hague Public Road, West Coast Deme-rara was charged with causing the death of Muhammed Ally on March 15 when his car PHH 5005 hit down Ally on the Blankenburg Public Road.

Khan’s lawyer Bernard De Santos said that the incident occurred two houses away from a wedding celebration.

He told the court that the deceased was apparently indulging in an excess of alcohol and was not paying attention to the road which was crowded with wedding celebrants.

De Santos said that the incident is not a case of reckless driving but his client was returning from the university and was not imbibing or anything of that nature. De Santos pointed out that his client was in custody since the incident and made an application for bail.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Mathews objected to bail on the grounds that a person’s life was lost. However the magistrate granted bail and the matter was transferred to the Leonora Magistrate’s Court for March 25.
