The government’s attempts at nation-building leave much to be desired

Dear Editor,

I refer to your editorial captioned “The Ramkarran recommendation” (08.03.20). I do hope you’ve dispatched an interpreter to both the Office of the President and Freedom House! The editorial’s lucid examination of Mr Ramkarran’s proposition would certainly need further interpretation in the ranks of the ruling party and government.

It’s quite baffling why the government – if not content with the “winner-take-all concept that continues to polarize many aspects of the nation’s life” – persists in applying failed initiatives in governing a state in crisis. The government’s incipient attempts at nation-building leave much to be desired.

I seem to remember a certain young lawyer who deviated from the party line on key issues ailing the society. I hope, for the Speaker’s sake, that he’s not destined for pasture in the same way. But then again, that might be good . . . if he then joins the AFC.

Yours faithfully,

Terence Pyle
