Repeat names, don’t say ‘the man’ or ‘the woman’

Dear Editor,

I have been reading your newspaper for a few years now. During that time I heve noted that many of your reporters refer to subjects in their reports as ‘the man’ or ‘the woman’. I find this a very impolite way to refer to folk being reported on. Is it not better to refer to subjects as ‘Mr. Jones’ or ‘Ms.James’, as the case may be?

Yours faithfully,

Gerald Reece

Editor’s note

On the first occasion a person is referred to his or her full name and designation are given. Subsequent references may be to him or her, the complainant or the accused, though sometimes the name is repeated.
