Two bridges estimated at $3.5 million were on Friday commissioned at Caria Caria in the Essequibo River.

According to a press release from the Region Three Regional Administra-tion, it built a 12-foot by 6-foot footpath bridge across the Saripapa Creek, at a cost of $2 million, while Barama provided the materials for the construction of the 70-foot by 12-foot bridge across the Caria Caria Creek. Residents built the bridge.
The release said Regional Information Officer Jaidev Dudhnath, Guyana Forestry Commission Forestry Officer Mark Mohan, Barama Liai-son Officer Mitzi Campbell and Welfare Officer Maurice Torres attended the commissioning ceremony.

In his address, Dudhnath said Barama’s contribution of “top class” materials was a fine gesture that should be emulated by other private sector and non-governmental organisations. He said too that the company had established a joint community relations committee inclusive of Caria Caria, Bethany, Aliki, Hogg Island, Troolie Island and Saxacalli and that the regional administration stood ready to offer support.

Dudhnath said partnerships were critical to enhancing development works. He said that contrary to the belief that the region has neglected some communities a solar system was recently commissioned at the health centre. Dudhnath said development carries a “cost” and urged residents to care the structures installed.

In her remarks, Campbell said Barama was pleased and proud to be associated with the communities. The company pledged its continued support to those areas and plans, within three weeks, to build a ramp at Great Troolie Island. Campbell said too the company intends to restart its annual bursary awards shortly.
