Warapana man who ‘eloped’ with girl remanded on carnal knowledge charge

Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded to prison a 21-year-old man accused of having carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl at Charity, Essequibo.
Shurland Benn of Warapana, Upper Pomeroon River is accused of committing the act on March 26. Benn’s lawyer Mohammed Zafar told the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court that he was instructed that the couple was “eloping” to live together. He added that both of the girl’s parents were aware of the situation. In his bail application Zafar submitted that these types of things happen often in the country areas.

The police prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence. The prosecutor further submitted that the girl is not of age to make those kinds of decisions.
Benn was ordered to appear at the Charity Magis-trate’s Court on May 8.
