GRA gets stay in Fidelity bond case

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) was granted a stay of execution in the Appeal Court on Thursday on Justice Jainarayan Singh Jr’s High Court order that had restored access to a sealed bond to Fidelity Investment Inc.
Justice of Appeal Yonette Cummings-Edwards granted the stay following lengthy arguments by GRA attorneys, Timothy Jonas and Gino Persaud and attorney-at-law, Hukumchand appearing for Fidelity Investment. But Fidelity requested leave to file an affidavit in answer and it was granted.

Last week Justice Singh ruled against the GRA following a High Court trial and made absolute two orders prohibiting the authority from sealing, seizing or interfering in any way with polar beer that Fidelity imported.

However he lifted a previous order that had prevented GRA from filing charges against the company.

GRA is expected to bring charges against Fidelity Investment Inc. and Joshua Safeek of the company next week.
The Appeal Court hearing continues in two weeks.
