The Region Two administration was finally able to complete work on a concrete bridge, which was done by two contractors to replace a wooden one across a trench aback of the Suddie Post Office during a six-month period of construction.
The job was started by one contractor but for some unknown reason came to a standstill for several months before another one completed it. During this time, a piece of board was precariously placed to facilitate pedestrian crossing. But now, residents are complaining about the deplorable condition in which the bridge is left.
A thick layer of soft mud with white sand on top covers the surface of the bridge about 20 feet by 16 feet to bring it to the same level as the roadway. This type of mud was readily available at the work site.
Much amazement was expressed by drivers in particular who got stuck on the bridge and had to be pulled out by other vehicles. Some sand truck drivers had to dump their load right there as it was too difficult to get out with the heaps still to be removed.
From my own observation, the bridge is in imminent danger of collapsing from the massive erosion surrounding it in the complete absence of any revetment whatsoever.
Tax payers’ money is definitely going down the drain when two contractors together can’t make one bridge for proper use within the community.
