School garbage fire causes scare

A fire which was lit to burn garbage at the Lodge Community High School, spiralled out of control causing a scare at the institution yesterday.
The summoning of a fire tender and action by some students averted damage to the buildings. A large swathe of grass in the school-yard was burnt.

The area, which is used to burn garbage and from where the fire spread (centre), and the burnt grass in the background at the Lodge Community High School yesterday.The fire started shortly before 4 pm yesterday and according to reports spiralled out of control because gasoline was added to a pile of garbage that was being burnt. An eyewitness said that the fire tender was quickly summoned and some students also assisted in helping to put out the fire.
When Stabroek News visited the school yesterday, sections of the burnt area were still smoking.
