Trio remanded on gun charges

Three men were remanded when they appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday on joint charges of gun and ammunition possession.

Randy Morris, 28, of 263 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Fizal Mohammed, 26, of Lot One East Ruimveldt and Colin Goodridge, 45, of Zeskenderen, Mahaicony were jointly charged with unlawfully having in their possession 6 live rounds of .32 ammunition and one .32 Ruger revolver without being the holders of valid licences.
Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson representing Morris and Mohammed said that the circumstances surrounding the charges are not going to hold up in a trial.

He said that his instructions are that the gun was found underneath a car and all the defendants were passing the vehicle at the same time and were arrested by the police.
He further said that three persons cannot be charged for the possession of the gun since the police have no evidence that all were holding it at the time it was alleged to be found in their possession.

Police prosecutor Denise Griffith asked that bail be refused since according to her instructions two of the defendants were in the car while the third was outside acting as a “look-out” for whatever transaction was ongoing when they were caught. She said that all of the accused had other matters in court and are well known characters to the police.

Thompson said that he is sure his clients do not have pending matters in the court. He also said that it will be difficult for the number two defendant Mohammed to survive at ‘Camp Street’ since he has an amputated right leg and three fingers missing on his right hand as a result of an accident.

The magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and the men have to return to Court Five on April 17 when their matter will continue.
