Surinamese jailed for four years for theft of GT&T cable

At the Springlands Court on Thursday, a Surinamese was sentenced to four years imprisonment after Magistrate Krishnadat Persaud found him guilty of stealing a quantity of Guyana Telephone & Telegraph (GT&T) cable.

Reports are that on September 23 last year, the defendant, Adrian Mappa, who was residing illegally at Number 79 Village, Corentyne, along stole a quantity of telephone cables valued $309,000 belonging to GT&T.

Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that Mappa removed the cable, measuring 33.5 ft in length from a utility pole and was arrested and charged with the offence. His trial was ongoing.

Magistrate Persaud ordered that he be immediately deported after serving the sentence.
