Man remanded on charge of slitting stepson’s throat

Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle remanded to prison a 42-year-old man accused of felonious wounding after he slit his stepson’s throat.

It is alleged that on April 19, Parmanand Lachmon of 75 Middle Road, La Penitence, with intent to main or disfigure used a knife to cut Troy Peters under his neck. He pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Lachmon’s attorney Mohammed Zafar told the court that he was inebriated and had a hazy memory of what had transpired. He said his instructions were that his client and Peters were drinking when an argument broke out and Peters was injured as a result.

Peters told the court that he did not have an altercation with Lachmon; rather, he had intervened in an argument between his mother and the man. He said that Lachmon was harassing his mother for money to feed his cocaine habit and when he told his stepfather to leave her alone the man pulled out a knife and inflicted the wound. Peters received both internal and external stitches almost half-way around the circumference of his neck, below his chin.

Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail on the grounds that the matter was very serious.

The magistrate then questioned why a more serious charge was not instituted against Lachmon; given the extent of the virtual complainant’s injuries. Lachmon was ordered to appear in Court Five on May 15.
