Agriculturalist honoured at IAC mela

The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) says around 10,000 persons attended its mela at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground last Sunday and in keeping with an annual tradition it honoured an Essequibian agriculturalist.

Members of the Apex Academy performing a dance at the melaAn IAC release said that the highlights of the mela were dances by the visiting Bhojpuri folk and dance troupe led by Manjula Diwakar and a poem done by children from the region. Other performers included Shri Prakash Gossai and Mian Mohamed Reyaud Razack.

Since 2005, the IAC has been honouring annually five persons of Indo-Guyanese origin for outstanding contributions. Previously honoured Essequibians were Isahak Basir, Tota Mangar and Moharajie Sewcharran.

Part of the gathering at the melaOn Sunday, Bhai Ramsarran of Reliance was honoured for his contributions in agriculture.

Tomorrow, the second mela will be held at the National Park and the final one will be staged on Monday at the Albion Sports Complex.
