Africa suffers from poor leaders

Dear Editor,

Mr Robert Mugabe, the President of Zimbabwe since the country got its independence in 1980, is refusing to give in to the will of the people. Some preliminary results had shown that Mr Mugabe has lost his majority in Parliament.

The election commission refused to give the full results of the election after it was held. There is an indication that Mugabe wants to cling on to power.

After twenty-eight years of Mugabe rule, Zimbabwe a once prosperous country and the food basket of Africa, is now among the poorest countries in Africa. The Zimbabwe rate of inflation is 100,000 per cent, and there is eighty-two per cent unemployment, grave food shortages, and people fleeing the country to neighbouring countries, especially South Africa.

While Mugabe can do as he pleases, such as imprisoning opposition members, other African countries are refusing to take action against Mugabe. South Africa President Thabo Mbeki is refusing to do anything. He respects Mugabe for being a colonial fighter for the liberation of Zimbabwe against Britain.

Leaders like Mugabe are responsible for the present state of Africa. Africa, the richest continent on the planet with endless resources such as oil, minerals, agricultural lands, forestry and wildlife is now the poorest continent.

It tops the list with AIDS, malnutrition, illiteracy, civil war, refugee camps, a fuel crisis and poverty all due to poor leaders.

Yours faithfully,
Baldeo Persaud
