Run-around from police to find out about relative’s detention

Dear Editor,
I live in Antigua and I got a call from my niece informing me of the detention of my nephew, Dwayne Browne. I called several telephone numbers at a cost of over EC$75.00, before I was given some information, which did not make any sense.

When I first called, a Constable Cole told me to call HQ; I told him it was an overseas call and I asked him for the number. He told me he did not know the number and when I said, “You are working in an organization and you do not know the number,” he slammed down the phone. I then called the switchboard again and was given the number through a rumbling phone line. I phoned HQ and was told that the matter was being dealt with by the officers at the Brickdam Police Station.

It was after all this run-around that I was eventually told by a Corporal Watson that my nephew was being held for questioning in relation to an armed robbery; my relatives also told me the same thing.
They said the police had to take fingerprints and hold some kind of ID parade.
My nephew is a hard-working young man, something that can be verified by his employer, Bounty Supermarket in Pike Street, Kitty, and the police need to check their facts.

My mother, (Dwayne’s grandmother) suffers from high-blood pressure, heart, arthritis, etc, and is bed-ridden . I would be grateful if the relevant authorities could expedite this matter and get my nephew out of that hog sty.
The police know the criminals, but because they are facing setbacks, they are harassing innocent people.
Yours faithfully,
Debbie Carrington
