Five parents for court over no-school kids

Five parents are to appear before Magistrate Fazil Azeez at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with failing to educate their children.

According to a press release from the Region Three Regional Administration Office during a recent campaign conducted by the Department of Education a number of children were found idling at home, around the community and doing domestic chores. Several West Demerara residents had complained about the nuisance they suffered from the children, including stealing, pilfering and pelting of their homes. They also reported an instance where a child appeared to have suffered physical abuse.
When Schools Welfare Officer Bissoondai Kumar contacted the parents, from Parika, Greenwich Park, Uitvlugt, Crane Housing Scheme and Plastic City, they were unable to provide satisfactory answers about why their children were not attending school. Kumar said too her department would be going after children kept from school as it was contrary to Section 14 of the Education Act, Ch 39:01.
