Canister thieves nabbed after Liliendaal to Light St chase

Two thieves, one a woman, were yesterday afternoon caught and beaten by public-spirited citizens after a long chase from Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, where they had broken into a home and carted off a canister, to Light Street, Alberttown.

The burglars, who had broken into the home of Dharanttie Ramlochan, were caught red-handed leaving the woman’s home around midday, Ramlochan’s sister Bhagwandei Ramlochan told Stabroek News yesterday. She recalled that she had gone home to prepare for a funeral when she saw the two thieves leaving her sister’s yard with a canister which she kept her money and other valuables in.

The woman said she challenged them and ordered them to leave the canister, but they ignored her and jumped into a taxi which was parked on the roadway waiting for them. According to Bhagwandei she also pleaded with the taxi driver to stop, but he said he could not and headed for the city. The woman said she immediately got into a taxi and trailed the vehicle, while at the same time making contact with the police.

However, the burglars headed to Alberttown where the female thief jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a yard where she changed her clothing.

The man in a bid to escape from the Ramlochans threw the canister in a clump of bushes and scaled several fences in Sixth Street Alberttown where he was eventually caught by public-spirited citizens and handed over to the police. The woman was also arrested, although she had already changed her clothing in a bid to disguise herself. Police retrieved the clothing she had changed and bundled her into a pick-up truck.

However up to late yesterday afternoon the canister had not been retrieved and police picked up some of the men who had chased after the thieves, saying they knew where the loot was stashed.
