Accused found hanging in Mahaica lock-ups

A 32-year-old man, who was placed in the Mahaica Police Station lock-ups after allegedly hitting a woman, was found hanging in the lock-ups yesterday.

Dead is Surendranauth Bogenauth called ‘Slackie’, of Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. Police, in a press release said that he was found hanging in the Mahaica lock-ups at about 2:30 pm yesterday.
Investigations revealed that Bogenauth had attended the Mahaica Magistrate Court where he appeared before Magistrate Yohance Cave on a charge of threatening language committed on Anita Ramjohn also of Belmont, Mahaica.

The police said that during the trial the magistrate adjourned court for a short while at which time Ramjohn went across to a shop opposite the police station for snacks. “It is reported that Surendranauth Bogenauth went across to the shop where he began to abuse Anita Ramjohn who made a report to the police”, the statement said.

Consequently, Bogenauth was arrested and placed to sit on the bench in the Enquiries Office. While Ramjohn was being questioned by the police in relation to the abuse, Bogenauth got up and cuffed her to her face in the presence of the ranks.

As a result he was placed in the lock-ups at the said station pending the resumption of court. When court resumed, the police went to the lock-ups with the intention of escorting him to court but he was found hanging by his leather belt from the ventilation window on the door of the lock-ups, the statement declared.

Bogenauth was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, the police said.
