PNCR slams “harassment” of young men by police

The PNCR has condemned the “harassment” of young men countrywide, in the wake of reports that at Kwakwani some young men were rounded up, beaten and then locked up.

In a press release, the party said the police have made no statement “for this course of action and what laws these young men have broken.” The PNCR said there have also been reports that young men on their way to work and to conduct business, were harassed and picked up by police in Agricola. Several of the young men were allegedly taken by police to Albouystown and left there.

The PNCR said it understands that a specially assembled squad with select members of the disciplined forces harassed and beat the young men. It said too the unit was formed “to hunt down criminals.” The party said from reports it has received the unit seems to be “a resuscitation of the Target Special Squad which, in its previous incarnation, was responsible for extra judicial killings and various other serious crimes in Guyana.”
